There are rumors for a while now about a new software platform from Apple: homeOS. This platform will be specifically made for a new Smart Home product from Apple, the homePad. The homePad will be a Smart Home Hub with a screen, which allows you to centrally control your Smart Home devices. After 9to5Mac discovered Apple has registered homeOS as a trademark, a first announcement at WWDC seems a bit more likely.
homeOS and the Apple homePad
With al the rumors about a new Smart Home hub with a screen, it seems very likely Apple will indeed launch such a device this year. While it was already expected in March, the delay of the new and more advanced Siri due to Apple Intelligence challenges has also delayed the homePad. It’s not clear whether this device is indeed called homePad, but w’ll use this name until it’s officially launched. The new Siri will probably be one of the main ways to control and use the homePad and connected Smart Home products. It’s likely you will also be able to show camera feeds of your HomeKit camera’s and control devices like you used to do in the Home app on the iPhone or iPad. The homePad will probably also feature a Facetime camera for video calls.
WWDC 2025
This Monday, June 9th, Apple organized their yearly developer congres, WWDC. Usually, Apple uses this event to announce new software, such that developers can already adjust their apps and add new future when the new software launches together with the new iPhones in September. WWDC is not a guarantee for new hardware, but it would make sense homeOS will be announced during WWDC. As it’s a complete new software platform, it would give developers time to create apps or adjust their products in such a way that it works well together with homeOS and the homePad. And if they announce homeOS, it’s also very likely that Apple will announce the device it will run on: the homePad. Actual availability of the homePad is not expected yet, this will probably be in Q3 of this year.
