Homey can now install firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave devices directly. With Homey Device Updates, supported devices no longer require a separate manufacturer app or hub just to receive new firmware. You start the update yourself in the Homey mobile app or Web App, after which Homey handles delivery, progress tracking and the completion notification.
Firmware updates can fix problems, improve stability and add features. Athom says they are often skipped because the process is cumbersome. Bringing device updates into one platform makes smart home maintenance more practical. Updates are not installed automatically, and downgrading to an older firmware version is not supported.
How to start Homey Device Updates
In the Homey mobile app, available updates appear under More (…) → Settings → Device Updates. You can also open an individual device, go to its settings and select Maintenance to check for new firmware. In both cases, the installation must be started manually.

Homey deliberately updates only one device at a time. This helps keep your Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread mesh stable and prevents unnecessary network congestion. You can still queue several compatible devices; Homey will process their updates one after another.
Battery-powered devices that use a sleep mode are an exception. Homey cannot reach them while their radio is switched off, so they cannot be added to the queue in advance. You first need to wake the device manually. Homey provides the relevant instructions when you start the update.
Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave use different update sources
For Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, firmware is supplied through the relevant app in the Homey App Store. Its developer therefore needs to make the update available. IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Niko, Inovelli, Zooz, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng and Nous already support the feature at launch. Devices added with Homey’s basic Zigbee or Z-Wave driver cannot receive updates through this system.
Matter devices follow a different process. Homey retrieves firmware from the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Distributed Compliance Ledger, a public registry for certified Matter devices. If an expected update is missing, it probably has not yet been published to the ledger. A manufacturer does not need to add separate Matter update functionality to its Homey app.
What happens when a firmware update fails?
An update can take some time, particularly on battery-powered devices. Some lights and smart plugs may also switch on or off briefly during installation. You can follow progress in Device Updates, and Homey adds a notification to the Timeline after a successful or failed update.
If an update fails repeatedly, check the connection and battery first. A device at the edge of your mesh can temporarily be moved closer to Homey. You should also replace a nearly empty battery, because installing firmware consumes more power than normal operation. The update can then be restarted from the Device Updates overview.
Availability and another Homey announcement
Device Updates is available for Homey Cloud, Homey Pro (2023–2026), Homey Pro mini and Homey Self-Hosted Server. Homey Pro and the Self-Hosted Server require version 13.2.0 or later. Mobile use requires Homey Mobile App 9.10.0 or newer. Updates can also be started from the Homey Web App.
The feature follows other recent additions that bring more management into Homey. Homey Energy recently gained solar forecasting and export pricing, for example. Homey now works with more than 70,000 devices from over 2,000 brands. Athom, the Dutch company behind Homey, became part of LG Electronics in 2024.
Another Homey announcement will follow on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 19:00 CEST. Athom has not disclosed what it will present. You can watch the live premiere on YouTube to see what is next for Homey.
Installation details, queueing guidance and troubleshooting steps are available on the official Homey support page for Device Updates.
