Apple appears to be preparing its biggest Apple Home expansion in years. According to recent reports, a new Apple TV 4K and a second-generation HomePod mini are nearly ready. Apple is also working on a new Home Hub with a display. The products have not been officially announced, but several sources expect the first launches this autumn.
The new Apple TV 4K could become more than a streaming box
The current Apple TV 4K dates from 2022, making it an obvious candidate for an update. According to MacRumors, the hardware for its successor is nearly ready. There are also rumours of an updated Siri Remote, although Apple has not confirmed which features it will add.
Its role as a home hub is particularly relevant for Apple Home. An Apple TV processes automations, provides remote access to your home and can control Matter accessories. The Ethernet version of the current Apple TV 4K also includes a Thread Border Router. A new model is expected to receive a faster chip and closer integration with the updated Siri and Apple Intelligence. Whether all AI features will actually run locally on the Apple TV remains uncertain.
HomePod mini 2 is likely to receive a more modern foundation
The HomePod mini is also due for replacement. The compact smart speaker launched in 2020 and has mainly received new colours and software features since then. A second generation is expected to use a newer chip, improve wireless connectivity and support the updated Siri. Better sound and microphones have also been mentioned, but no firm specifications are available yet.
Like the current model, the HomePod mini will probably retain a central role in Apple Home. The speaker can run automations and works as a Thread Border Router for compatible Matter devices. The Apple HomePod mini remains available, but waiting is sensible if you are not in a hurry and a successor is close.
Apple Home Hub brings smart home controls to a display
The expected Apple Home Hub is the most distinctive new product. It could feature a display measuring around seven inches and be designed for use on a table or wall. You could use it to control accessories and automations, view cameras and widgets, and make FaceTime calls. This would make it an alternative to smart displays from Google and Amazon, but with full Apple Home integration.
According to 9to5Mac, the Home Hub is expected between October 2026 and early 2027. Its schedule reportedly depends heavily on the updated Siri. Both a wall-mounted version and a model with a speaker stand have been discussed, although Apple has not confirmed these details either. Names such as HomePad, HomePod with a display and Home Hub remain unofficial.
Should you buy now or wait for the new Apple Home products?
If you need a home hub immediately, the current Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini remain useful options. They support Apple Home, automations and Matter over Thread. However, waiting makes sense if you are mainly interested in a faster Siri, future AI features or smart home controls on a display. The expected launch window is close, and Apple may adjust the prices and availability of the current models after an announcement.
The new Home Hub looks particularly useful in a fixed location such as a kitchen, living room or hallway. For television, apps and a wired network connection, the Apple TV 4K will probably remain the most complete home hub. If you mainly want voice control and music in an additional room, the compact HomePod mini is the more suitable choice.
