ThirdReality ZL2: a 1,600-lumen Zigbee bulb for big rooms

ThirdReality has launched the Zigbee Smart Color Bulb ZL2, an A21 bulb rated at 1,600 lumens and positioned as the brand’s brightest colour bulb so far. That is roughly the output of a 100W incandescent, and double what the existing ZL1 manages. The ZL2 is aimed at spaces where a standard bulb falls short: a garage, a workshop, a carport or a living room with a high ceiling. One caveat up front for readers outside North America, because this is a US model with an E26 base running on 120 volts. For a European fitting, look at the ZL4 further down this article.

1,600 lumens, tunable white and full colour

The ZL2 pairs tunable white from 2700K to 6500K with millions of RGB colours and dims from 1 to 100 percent. That low dimming floor matters more than it sounds: plenty of budget smart bulbs stop around 10 percent, which rules them out as a night light in a hallway or bathroom. The bulb measures 2.66 by 4.88 inches, about 6.8 by 12.4 centimetres, so it is noticeably larger than an A19 or A60 bulb. Check that your shade or fixture has the clearance before you order a four-pack.

Zigbee 3.0 with a built-in repeater

Inside sits Zigbee 3.0, and like the rest of ThirdReality’s bulb line the ZL2 doubles as a repeater. Every bulb you leave on mains power strengthens your Zigbee mesh, which helps most when you have battery sensors sitting at the edge of the network. The bulb works directly with Home Assistant over ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, plus SmartThings, Aeotec, Homey, Hubitat, ThirdReality’s own Hub Gen2 Plus, and Echo and eero devices that carry a Zigbee radio. Apple Home and Google Home are not in that list; for those you need the separate Smart Bridge MZ1. Firmware updates arrive over the air. If you want a refresher on how these protocols differ, our explainer on Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Wi-Fi lays them out side by side.

Price, availability and the European version

ThirdReality has been selling the ZL2 since 25 September 2026 through Amazon and its own web shop, at $15.99 for a single bulb or $39.99 for a four-pack. That works out to around ten dollars per bulb in the multipack, which is low for a 1,600-lumen colour bulb. Because the A21 shape with an E26 base is a North American standard, this is not the obvious pick for European fittings. For Europe, ThirdReality released the Smart Color Bulb ZL4 in late 2025: an A60 bulb with an E27 base, the same 2700K to 6500K tunable white and the same Zigbee 3.0 foundation with repeater support. The brand has not specified the ZL4’s light output, so do not assume you get 1,600 lumens in Europe too. Earlier this month ThirdReality also showed at IFA 2026 that it is leaning further into Matter over Thread.
